STRONG CURRENT KILLS RUSSIAN HOLIDAYMAKER.

On October 16th a 59 year old Russian holidaymaker who was swimming on a red flagged beach in Chlorakas was pulled under the water by a strong current.

Andrei Vladimirovitch’s wife with two other holidaymakers tried desperately to pull him up and out of the water. Despite attempts Mr Vladimirovitch was pronounced dead on arrival at Paphos General Hospital.

The beach was red flagged showing it was unsafe to enter the water and due to the end of prime season, no lifeguards are on duty on most beaches throughout Paphos.

POLICE INVESTIGATE SYRIAN MAN’S DEATH.

A 34 year old Syrian man named, Adnan Al Farachi, who is the father of five children currently living in Syria, has died in circumstances, which are being investigated by Police.

On the morning of October 17th, a Romanian National, who was apparently working with Al Farachi at a building site in Chlorakas, rushed him to hospital in his car. Another Syrian man working with the two was operating a piece of machinery on the site.

Police have taken the man in for questioning after they discovered a water tank on its side at the site. Apparently, they believe this may have fallen off the machinery and struck the victim on the head.

The deceased sustained severe damage to his cranium and despite doctors’ efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead.

NEW PROPOSAL FOR DRIVING LAWS.

Andreas Facontis of AKEL has been discussing the new proposals for amendments to driving laws and regulations. Mr. Facontis said that the original proposals by the Government were very strict and in the opinion of political party AKEL, too strict.

Examples of the suggestions were to double penalties for drivers who had held their license for three years or less, and in some circumstances to confiscate people’s cars.

AKEL did not come out in support of the new proposals, and as DISY and AKEL have the power to prevent laws being passed, it will be amended. The Minister of transport Maria Malaktou Pambali has said vehicles will now not be confiscated and people have 12 points on their license instead of 11, as previously proposed before it is taken away.

Banned drivers will have to take new lessons and retake their tests before they are given permission to drive again. The Government are trying to make the roads safe and reduce the number of road accidents and deaths, as Cyprus has one of the worst road accident rates in Europe
